Fish Aquarium & Pond Water Testing Suite

Fish Aquarium & Pond Water Testing Suite – Overview

Regular Testing of your pond/fish tank water is essential for maintaining the health of aquatic life and prolonging the life of your fish. If you have just finished cycling your pond/fish tank, this water test suite is perfectly suited to confirm that all parameters are suitable before adding your fish. Our laboratory tests all parameters using highly accurate and precise instrumentation. For Nitrate, the result provides you with a quantified and highly accurate NO3 result. This will demonstrate how accurately your nitrogen cycle is preforming and if your water change/maintenance schedule is sufficient.

Commercial ‘at home’ water kits provide results that have large measurement uncertainty & low accuracy/precision. This suite will provide with you high accurate/precise results, which will provide you with a baselevel that can be used to calibrate your at-home tests kits and so you know exactly what your water parameters actually are. Our Pond & Fish Tank suite will help give peace of mind and ensure the environment is suitable for your animals. The scientists at Andersen Caledonia have a wealth of knowledge in the aquatic water testing area and are happy to advise customers of how to best get the best out of their tank/pond performance and how to action (if needed) high results.

Parameters Tested:

  • Ammonia (as NH4)
  • Nitrite (as NO2)
  • Nitrate (as NO3)
  • pH
  • Hardness (as CaCO3)
  • Alkalinity (as CaCO3)
  • Phosphate (as PO4)
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Test parameters explained:

  • Ammonia: first stage of the nitrogen cycle; fish waste is first converted into this and in high concentrations is fatal to fish.
  • Nitrite: second stage of the nitrogen cycle; NH4 is converted into this by Nitrososomas bacteria, less harmful to fish, but over >0.25 mg/L can cause stress and in high concentrations can be fatal.
  • Nitrate: third stage of the nitrogen cycle; NO2 is converted into this by Nitrobacter bacteria, usually not harmful to fish in concentrations <30 mg/l, however high concentrations can lead to fish stress and illness.
  • pH: this test shows the concentration of H+ ions / OH- Hydroxide ions. High H+ = acidic, high Hydroxide = alkaline. Depending on the fish type, pH will impact the fish stress levels.
  • Hardness: Incorporates both general (GH) and carbonate (KH) hardness. Different fish species require different hardness levels to thrive.
  • Alkalinity: the ability of the water to buffer pH swings, low alkalinity = high potential swings, High alkalinity = low swings.
  • Phosphate: Water that has high concentrations of PO4 will likely develop high amounts of algae blooms. Low PO4 levels can impact plant growth.
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa: High concentrations of this bacteria can cause fin rot/other diseases in fish with lower immunity. This test will help direct you of any treatment required and what preventative actions can be taken to remove it from the water column.
